ABSTRAK :
System backup on a computer network is normally done by manually transferring files and databases to the database sever. In many case, the size of transferred files is very large and occupying most of the proccessing power of the server and network bandwidth. It is deemed necessary to build a system in which only certain important files are transferred. These can be achieved through scheduled backups on a network using FTP. This system will select which files are important to be backed up by these criteria : files which are most frequently accessed and files which have been accessed at least for a certain number of times over a period of time, in which the minimum number is provided by the user. Selected files will then transferred as backup to the database server at a scheduled time. Experiments using this system shown that the backup speed is not affected by the number of files, but by total size of the files. Tests with backing up 4, 8, and 12 files; each having total size of 7.01 MB, 12.74 MB and 19.03 MB resulting in transfer times of 1, 5, and 12 minutes respectively. This concludes that for each test, the average transfer rate is 7.01 MB/min, 2.54 MB/min and 3.17 MB/min, with the best transfer rate is for 4 files, hence proving that transferring few selected files which scheduled several times are better than transferring many files at once, should a backup process commenced.
